Children building with notched logs discover the rule in about four minutes: walls are easy, corners decide everything. That is not a quirk of the toy. It is the central problem of log building, and the toy inherits it honestly from the craft it copies.
A stacked-log wall carries its own weight downwards, so the fastening only has to stop the logs sliding sideways. Cutting a saddle into the underside of each log, so it drops over the one below, does that with no metal at all. In regions with plenty of timber and very little ironmongery, that was the cheapest possible answer.
The round saddle notch is the familiar one, with a scooped cup cut to sit over the crossing log. Square notches and V-notches are quicker to cut but shed water less well. Dovetail corners, where the log ends are cut to a wedge, are the finest work and the least forgiving, because a single sloppy cut leaves a gap you cannot close.
The toy version simplifies all of this to one symmetrical groove near each end, which is why the same piece can serve as a wall log or a cross log. A modern set in the Lincoln Logs style keeps the notch shallow and square precisely so that a child can rotate a piece without thinking about which face is up. Real builders had no such luxury.
On a real cabin the log ends stick out past the corner, and it looks decorative. It is not. The projecting end holds the wood fibres beyond the notch in compression so the joint cannot split out under load, and it throws rainwater clear of the corner. Toy sets keep the overhang, which is why builds look right even at small scale.
Round logs never meet along their length, so the space between courses had to be filled. Chinking was whatever was to hand: moss, clay, lime mortar, split saplings, later cement. Children notice the gaps in their own walls and often try to plug them with paper or fabric, which is a rather good instinct.
Real logs taper. A tree is thicker at the butt than at the top, so builders alternated the direction of each course to keep the wall level, and the wall still settled several centimetres over its first years as the timber dried. Toy logs are perfectly cylindrical and never settle, which makes the toy much easier and slightly less true.
An interesting half-hour with an older child is to build one wall with logs of only two lengths and then try the same shape mixing four lengths. The mixed wall needs planning at the corner and forces them to think a course ahead. That is the same reasoning a builder does with a stack of felled timber and a scribe.
Stacked-log construction survived from Scandinavia and the Alps through to North American frontier settlement because it needs one tool, one skill and no factory. The toy has kept its form for a century for a similar reason: the notch does its job, and there is nothing much left to improve.
